ABSTRACT

That the educational experience of women physics students is perceived as a battleground, is identified even more by comments reporting on their experiences once at York. By focusing attention on that tiny minority of women students who had eventually made their way up the educational pyramid, their elaboration on their own experiences and perceptions could provide a basis for examining the implications of women continuing to demonstrate a high level of ability in physics. Remarks like these, again typical of the range of responses from the total group, go some way towards giving an outline picture of what it is like to be a woman studying physics. It is done in the awakening knowledge that it is one of the hardest subjects to study, and one in which you will find yourself in a rapidly diminishing minority.
