ABSTRACT

In the past decade, Indian women have initiated multiple campaigns and projects to combat the stigma surrounding menstruation. In this chapter, I analyze how two Indian digital artists, @wallflowergirlsays and @doodleodrama, have used Instagram to showcase their art that challenges menstrual stigma. Using a cyberfeminist framework to analyze their digital art pertaining to menstruation, I show that this creative work is part of an emerging feminist digital counterpublic in India that is engaged in reclaiming bodies from patriarchal norms. Through work that showcases leaking menstruating bodies and portrays complex stories regarding menstruation, these artists advance a feminist politics of embodiment and consciousness raising that challenges the concealment and silence taboos associated with menstrual stigma. Even as this artwork contributes to the development of feminist digital counterpublics, it also provokes questions about the limits of feminist solidarity.
