ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a continuation to, and a development of the series of books published by Karnac on social dreaming. It examines some of the psychological and social processes of dreaming. The book explores a hypothesis that: the social dreaming matrix, its prequels and derivatives, embodies the yearning to belong to a society bigger than one’s own body to facilitate facing contradictory painful and joyful truths about human emotional living in a wider human world, which need to be dreamt to be realised. It focuses on the application of social dreaming to anthropological studies and group processes. The book discusses a development of the social dreaming method, involving the use of art-making to extend and amplify the material emerging from a social dreaming matrix. It describes a series of gatherings open to a community in Tel Aviv, Israel.
