ABSTRACT

The chapter highlights that development, and by implication sustainable development, is conceptualized in neoliberal terms. As a result of this, sustainable development is a tool that is harnessed in the service of capital, especially the continued exploitation of natural resources in the Global South. The success of sustainable development is dependent on governance and public participation but the cumulative outcome of sustainable development under neoliberalism has been more control over resources. Governance has been plagued by corruption, which in turn militates against the realization of sustainable development objectives.
