ABSTRACT

The peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, which is now in a stage of bilateral and multi-lateral negotiations in different committees, and the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1995, has affected the trends and the orientation of regional planning and development in Israel. The “Green Line” as a border between Israel, Jordan and the Palestinians was established after Israel’s War of Independence in 1949, and separated Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip from the rest of Israel’s territory. The city of Jerusalem is a site of demographic and physical competition between two populations, Israelis and Palestinians, each with the clear political purpose of holding and controlling the city and its environs. Peace between Israel and Jordan provides opportunities for the region developed as a crossroads between Israel, Jordan and Egypt.
