ABSTRACT

Valerie always refers to Books Beyond Words as books without words, which they are, of course. Valerie has continued to co-author books from time to time and remains a strong advocate of the series, although her own clinical interest moved away from intellectual disability as she became more in demand for her expertise in dissociative disorders. As an aside for interested PhD students, there is a rich source of material available from the development of these titles, and the sessional material from our eighteen-year forensic group has also been carefully preserved for possible future study. Perhaps Murray Cox also influenced the theoretical basis of Books Beyond Words, with his theological insights. The work in intellectual disability has been rewarded with honorary doctorates in a variety of fields including theology, science, medicine, and humanities, reminding that the whole of human experience can be found and examined in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
