ABSTRACT

An important reason behind the unrelenting commitment to better healthcare information technology (IT) adoption in Shengjing Hospital has been the emphasis attached by the hospital leadership. Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University is a university-affiliated organization with features of comprehensiveness, modern technology, and advanced IT adoption. The hospital has gone through a long process from the initial stage of electronic record to the paperless program and been the leader of healthcare IT in China. In addition to technical challenge, complicated relationship exists among administrative departments, IT Center, and clinical staff as the hospital built up IT capacity. The IT capabilities of the hospital were growing amid the contradictory but harmonious relationships. Process improvement is a continuous undertaking involving achieving a paperless environment in transfusion, operation, sterilization service, and outpatient clinic.
