ABSTRACT

I reflect on my experience in teaching and lecturing as a Fulbright scholar for a semester during the historic time of the 2016 G20 Global Economic Summit in Hangzhou, the ninety-fifth anniversary of the Central Communist Party of China, and the 2016 presidential election in America. This chapter examines my experiences getting around the city with limited spoken Chinese on a one-speed bike, getting to know local shopkeepers, students, and university personnel with all the delights, mishaps, and blunders made by a foreign professor. I also wonder why so many kept using the phrase “Be like water” during my academic sojourn in China.
