ABSTRACT

I was a Fulbright lecturer in the 2016–2017 academic year at Southwest University in Chongqing, China. This chapter explores my challenges in teaching introductory American government to freshman- and sophomore-level Chinese students. It considers the pedagogical adjustments required for effective teaching and in addition, focuses on several topics raised throughout the year by students. These topics included gun violence, feminism in modern American society, and the role of Christianity in Western civilization.
