ABSTRACT

Many children and adolescents experience traumatic and adverse experiences that increase their risk of developing emotional and behavioral disorders. There are multiple evidence-based treatments for youth exposed to trauma and adversity, although family engagement in treatment and implementation in community settings are ongoing challenges that limit the reach of these treatments to youth in need. Increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of childhood trauma and adversity has created momentum toward system and policy changes that hold great potential for meeting the needs of youth who experience trauma and adversity. Ultimately, reducing the individual and societal burdens associated with childhood trauma and adversity requires a focus on preventing trauma and adversity and promoting healthy, safe, and developmentally supportive environments for all youth.
