ABSTRACT

Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) have become important frameworks in school settings, due largely to their efficiency and effectiveness. In this chapter, we provide an overview of MTSS, including applications across behavior and academics. We then offer an in-depth description of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (SWPBIS), a framework designed to teach students appropriate behavior and diminish problem behavior, along with research to support its effectiveness. We delineate core intervention practices at each of the three tiers of SWPBIS, with accompanying research support. Finally, we discuss gaps and directions for future research.
