ABSTRACT

The Behavioral, Academic, and Social Engagement (BASE) model is an adaptive and comprehensive classroom management program designed to fit within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) or Tiered Systems of Adaptive Support (TSAS). Building upon a dynamic systems framework, the BASE model focuses on the whole student-in-context and provides a foundation for adapting and intensifying supports for students with or at risk of significant behavioral difficulties both within and across tiers. The conceptual foundations and the development of the BASE model are briefly presented and the three BASE components (i.e., Academic Engagement Enhancement, Competence Enhancement Behavior Management, and Social Dynamics Management) are described. Empirical results of the use of the BASE model are summarized and implications for future research, program development, and the preparation of teachers and related services providers are considered.
