ABSTRACT

Research indicates the potential of several intervention packages to improve academic and behavioral outcomes for students with or at risk for emotional/behavioral disorders. Though effective multi-component interventions vary in terms of time, resources, and personnel, several of these interventions share similar research-based components. These components include adult mentoring, data-based decision-making, and home–school collaboration. In this chapter, we describe these three components. Then, we discuss three related interventions that include these core components: Check-in/Check-out; Check, Connect, and Expect; and Check and Connect. Our discussion focuses specifically on the research related to the effectiveness of these interventions on improving outcomes for students with or at risk for an EBD. Finally, based on the existing literature base, we offer recommendations for future research.
