ABSTRACT

Youth with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) are at risk for experiencing the poorest adult outcomes of all youth with disabilities. With an increasing focus on intensifying interventions for youth in the context of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in schools, we argue for the development and training of intervention specialists in special education who can address the multiple and complex needs of youth with EBD within the MTSS framework. Intervention specialists serve as education leaders in two roles: (a) as adaptive intervention specialists and (b) as intervention specialist coordinators. In this chapter, we describe their leadership roles, effective practices, and professional preparation in the context of a school collaborative care model.
