ABSTRACT

Youth with/at risk of emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) tend to experience a range of dynamic and intensive intervention needs. The breadth and depth of the social, emotional, and behavioral challenges experienced by youth with/at risk of EBD often makes it necessary for educators and related service providers to have ongoing professional development (PD) to ensure they effectively support the children and adolescents they serve. In this chapter, we discuss issues and innovations in PD support for teachers and related service providers who work with youth with EBD. We begin with a discussion of common issues in PD and then focus on general coaching models as an approach to provide ongoing support and training in relation to service providers’ real-world experiences with youth. Next, we discuss directed consultation, the use of technology, and “Wise” interventions as potential areas of innovation in the delivery of PD for professionals who work with students with/at risk of EBD. We conclude with a discussion of future directions.
