ABSTRACT

This chapter focusses on the concept of place attachment, providing a summary of theoretical and methodological approaches, as well as a discussion of key debates in the literature. Place attachment, which refers to the emotional bonds that people form with particular places, has received considerable attention over the past three decades, leading to a flourishing body of research across disciplinary boundaries. Yet it also has some limitations, in part arising from the use of contrasting approaches that challenge the accumulation of a coherent body of knowledge. In this chapter I summarise different theoretical and methodological approaches to place attachment, as well as providing insights into ways that I have responded to strengths and weaknesses of the literature to develop a place-based and mixed method approach to understanding conflicts over the siting of energy technologies.
