ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings on the relation of social and psychological forces to the aetiology and development of health problems. It discusses certain determinants of persons' attitudes and behaviour in relation to their health. The chapter looks at public health agencies operating in the community. There is much emphasis in public health on influencing individuals' behaviour regarding their own health. This is central to the work of public health nurses and of health educators. Public health leaders often wish to develop citizens' organizations as part of educational campaigns to bring about the improvement of local conditions or to create public support for a health programme or activity. Contemporary health problems are deeply embedded in many aspects of community life. Often it is difficult if not impossible to disentangle a problem in physical health from one in mental health. Economic insecurity and poverty cannot be separated from health problems.
