ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the need by examining the trends in the language service industry. It illustrates the implications these trends have for individual translators and businesses, discusses prospective future developments in the industry, and reviews developments in the language service industry. Virtually all instances of translation for purposes of publication involve computerized aids or digital resources of some kind. New business models, such as crowdsourcing, are poised to markedly influence professional translation practices in the future. The separation of localization and translation is typical of large-scale localization projects, because their size and complexity require a clear division of tasks and roles and the adoption of well-organized protocols and procedures. The interactional model of knowledge extraction and exchange has entered the realm of translation generation, giving rise to models that provide alternatives to traditional localization processes. The chapter concludes with thoughts on possible future developments that could affect both translation practice and the industry.
