ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by outlining concepts related to translation, and addresses “pragmatic translation,” or translation for communication purposes, in the context of technical communication and excluding literary translation. It describes the different phases of comprehension in detail, emphasizing realities that run counter to widely held myths and misconceptions by highlighting certain key points: translators are experts because they put into action a network of knowledge based on, and inspired by, the document they are to translate. In writing about “translation,” it is important to note that there are numerous concepts concerning how to do translations. The chapter aims to state general comments about translation, shows that translators are experts, explain the main aspect of translation, and explains translators’ competencies, translation procedures, and assessment. Discursive parameters allow translators to assemble an entire store of knowledge based on the text to be translated.
