ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the overarching question: In trading with European nations, what do technical communicators need to know about the processes delineated in the European translation standard? Approaches to translation studies could be based upon a range of theories, depending on the translation’s use. Relevance theory has moved the focus of the translation process away from the source text and towards the target market text. According to relevance theory, the audience’s efforts to understand the text must be kept low at all times. Translational action is an instrumental part of what can be termed process action or the freedom to interpret and change elements to convey meaning. The combination of relevance factors, translational action, explicitation, and implicitation places huge demands on technical communicators and translators. The results of the translation-revision-review process were as diverse as the texts and the students involved.
