ABSTRACT

The researchers have been involved in developing a Mobile GIS for their own business use in field data capture. In liasing with clients they have also had the opportunity to explore the level of development, the different approaches, the differing perceptions and the general attitudes towards GIS in general. From these experiences many problems in the successful implementation of GIS into business particularly in the area of asset management have been identified. Drawing on their own experience and those of their clients the authors set out to identify the problems facing GIS in business and also to suggest that the development of GIS should be considered within the context of an information strategy plan.
