ABSTRACT

In the Netherlands, more and more pupils with disabilities and learning difficulties are entering higher education. In 1996 there were approximately 400,000 students in higher education, studying in one of the 13 universities and 73 Hogescholen. An institution was founded in Amsterdam in 1632 to train students in philosophy and commerce. One aspect of provision where students with disabilities can be seen to experience inclusiveness is the system of study advisers. "Handicap and Studie" is an organisation established to give assistance to students with disabilities in secondary and higher education in overcoming difficulties in education, employment, and social life. Sometimes, students with disabilities meet with staff from "Handicap and Studie" who are also in touch with the higher education specialist advisers. There has been a significant increase in the number of students going to university and this has not been accompanied by a commensurate increase in the resources need to meet the increased demand.
