ABSTRACT

The number of students with disabilities who are able to enter university and study independently is growing. Whilst the Slovak Republic is relatively young, its origins go back many years and it has some very old cultural and educational traditions. No official statistics are collected about the number of students with disabilities in universities in the Slovak Republic. The support centre for students with visual impairments at the Comenius University, Bratislava, is the first and currently the only place of its kind which is geared towards supporting and guiding students with disabilities. Students with disabilities do not have prioritised entry at the Comenius University or indeed at any other university on the Slovak Republic. Students who are blind or who have visual impairments work closely with the support centre throughout the entire period of their courses. Because the approach adopted by the University and the study centre is one of inclusion and student independence, personal assistance is not provided.
