ABSTRACT

Higher education in Greece is offered in 17 publicly funded and monitored Universities and in 12 Technological Educational Institutes. The difficulties start with the fact that the Directorate of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education does not have a separate department organised to deal with the problems of disabled students. The consequence is that disabled students miss the opportunity to discover their intellectual capacities, interests, and motives in order to explore the academic fields and make a wise choice of studies. The Counselling Centre of the Psychology Department was founded in 1990 and is the only university section which tries to provide services for disabled students. According to State Law students with severe disabilities - those who are blind, deaf, the ones who have thalassaemia, hydrocephaly, and pernicious anaemia - enter the university without sitting any exams. The objective of the project was the training of 15 students of the department about issues relating to counselling deaf people.
