ABSTRACT

This chapter provides both a justification for primary science and an introduction to the kind of science which can be fostered by non-specialist class teachers in primary schools. Science is one of the ways which human beings have developed for relating to the physical world around them, and it offers natural and most fruitful ways of learning for children at the primary stage when they are dependent upon first-hand, concrete experiences. In the sense of 'official' scientific ideas, the body of knowledge of science is not generally appropriate to younger children but the practices of thinking about experiences and of developing one's own ideas and conclusions from investigations is an essential part of science at any age. Children will see the sense of making it fair but they will sometimes need help in picking out 'unfair- things' and in making things fairer.
