ABSTRACT

The origins of the idea that the ‘need’ of students was the first criterion in shaping the social studies curriculum. When first advanced by the Committee on Social Studies in 1916, was considered ‘a new and most important factor’ at least seven members of the Committee on Social Studies had been active in charity organization or social settlement work. The writings of these committee members with settlement and charity organization work, articulating idea of need. As a defect in the mental, moral, and intellectual character of the individual served by the settlement or charity organization worker.
