ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the extent of agreement between practitioners and professors of adult education on the skills and knowledge needed by adult educators. It is initiated as the result of a publication by Rossman and Bunning in which they assessed the knowledge and skills areas of future adult educators as perceived by the professors of adult education. The chapter examines a discrepancy between one group of practitioners and professors regarding priority of some identified needs. Liveright, in analyzing the variation among practitioners and a lack of shared common goals, indicated that the field of adult education was not at the point where the desirable content and organization of a program of graduate study for adult educators could be specified. Professors of adult education might be expected to provide future adult educators with knowledge and skills consistent with their own opinions regarding needed knowledge and skills.
