ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses graduate program of adult education. Considering adult education as an emerging profession, a graduate program in the field should increasingly teach techniques based on general principles and inculcate students a feeling of commonality and purpose, and a belief that adult education represents a continuing career. To arrive at the desired degree of pro-fessionalization the graduate program should develop an understanding of the social needs for adult education and the social role to be performed by its practitioners. A search for the objectives of a graduate program for adult educators leads next to an examination of the extent and kinds of agreement within the field about the desired competencies required of a full-time adult educator. A major aim of graduate education for adult educators must therefore be to develop the image, the code of ethics, the values, and the scope and limit of adult education, and these in turn will develop the personality of the adult educator.
