ABSTRACT

The establishment of the organisation was considered vitally important at the time, and there is no doubt that it has played an essential supportive and developmental role in the creation of independent learning in science in schools. The emphasis in ILIS has, from the start, been the provision of assistance to teachers in building up their own approach to independent learning. The development of independent learning in science implies originality on the part of both teachers and students and hence many local variations in both curriculum content and methods of working. The organisation of the workshop was based on the realisation, by a group of biology teachers, that to achieve their purposes in developing independent learning methods and resources, a co-operative was essential, the kind of preparation required being unattainable by any one teacher.
