ABSTRACT

Drama is an activity which draws upon a form of behaviour that has its roots in early childhood play. Through play children are able to learn about themselves and through playing someone else can aid our personal development. Drama is a very natural and accessible form of learning for young children and older students alike. The main purpose of drama is the exploration of personal dilemma and social interaction, of attitudes and of morality through a fictional form and it does this by being a shared and co-operative activity. It takes as its contexts those elements of education that have been brought under the umbrella of citizenship. Drama offers teachers a unique method of teaching citizenship which engages the pupils and motivates them. Teachers who work in this way find that they are able to challenge, stimulate and create a wide range of learning areas.
