ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to contribute to the thinking of management teams in schools as they examine the place of citizenship in the curriculum. It explores the concept of cross-curricularity, first, within the context of a model of curriculum planning common in schools and then within an alternative model. It applies this to the theme of citizenship. Accepted strategies for auditing the curriculum are considered alongside a particular notion of mapping. The chapter recognises that education is a life-long activity and it is written with all learners in mind. Therefore, although it refers throughout to students and schools, readers will be able to relate these terms to the age group and institution relevant to them. A curriculum defined in terms of learning experiences focuses on the process, as opposed to the content, of learning. It suggests that the curriculum is a dynamic, interactive and, above all, contextualised process.
