ABSTRACT

Health education and education for citizenship have consistently played a part in the formal and informal curriculum of British schools. In Health Education the 'knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes which most pupils could be expected to have acquired by the end of each key stage' are outlined in a framework of nine components, based upon current health concerns. Effective schools have the well-being of all their members as central to their purpose. They value the contributions of all partners in their communities. Partnerships with health professionals in their localities and with voluntary organisations should ensure good collaborative relationships for everyone's benefit. Healthy attitudes and good personal relationships are vital contributors to a healthy lifestyle. The health-promoting school creates a healthy physical and social environment which encourages self-confidence and self-esteem as well as promoting good physical health in all its members.
