ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses who Coyote is and the values generated and passed down by his teachings. Most importantly, it is to weave together a creation story and speak to the importance of the sacred Medicine Tree site near present-day Darby, Montana. It is very important that the interest of Native peoples be prompted to gather their legends so that significant aspects of their tribal and cultural heritage are transmitted. In addition to teaching lifelong survival skills, Coyote stories are entertaining and fun to listen to; one never grows tired of learning about him. Coyote’s bad deeds are very valuable to learn from but, much more importantly, he protected all animal life and mankind by combating the existence of powerful monsters and serpents, which threatened the lives and wellbeing of his relatives and nations. Coyote uniquely possesses a multiple nature- that of man, animal and Creator, and is prone to misjudgments.
