ABSTRACT

Speech and language therapy has a long tradition in Serbia and is rooted in the special education and health system. The chronic lack of standardized tests for the assessment of language and communicative abilities in the Serbian population means that there are no national norms to adhere to, which greatly complicates the diagnosis of developmental disorders and empirical research on its prevalence. In Serbia, the treatment of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) is carried out in public health institutions, private health facilities and private logopedic centres. Improving public awareness of DLD in Serbia would lead to greater interest, better recognition and treatment of children with DLD and the further development of the logopedist profession in Serbia. The long tradition of logopedic treatments in Serbia has created a certain inertia in practice and an accumulation of eclectic approaches in therapeutic work.
