ABSTRACT

The Sikhs are distributed all over the country enjoying great diversity amongst them. A broad sketch of the community across the country is attempted under three main heads and five subheads. The first one discusses the main demographic features of their population in India in terms of distribution, sex, literacy, occupation, etc. There is no Indian state without their presence. The section on Sikhs in Punjab dwells upon their demographics besides sketching out the elements of caste and communalism affecting them. The tribal presence is also noted. Operation Bluestar and the November killings of Sikhs in Delhi and outside too have affected their lives and occupations. The last section discusses Sikhs outside Punjab such as those in the Deccan, North-east, and Bihar, who are there for about three centuries. The issues of Sikh form/identity and of the Punjabi language concerning them have also been discussed.
