ABSTRACT

Britain has one of the largest overseas Sikhs settlements outside India. Sikhs have been present in the country since the nineteenth century and have made their impact on political and cultural life. This chapter reviews the brief history of settlement, the patterns of social and economic change within the community, the role of the Sikh community in shaping multiculturalism, and the challenge of homeland politics since 1984. It will also assess the recent developments, especially the consequences for Sikhs of the referendum in June 2016 and Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. The chapter will conclude by assessing the role of the British Sikh in the global leadership of the community considering the rise of nationalist politics in the diaspora and India.
