ABSTRACT

The protection and conservation of cultural heritage being undertaken in Punjab, both continue to be governed by colonial systems in terms of the legal tools and organizational structures implemented by the State. Yet memory, faith, and tradition continue to determine the cultural narrative of the people of Punjab. While clearly material culture is intrinsically linked to a way of life of a people, conservation of built heritage is still removed from cultural practices. This chapter deliberates on what is or ought to be the philosophy of conservation in Punjab? How is “heritage” defined in the minds, hearts, and lives of the people of Punjab? Are principles of conservation already embedded in the Sikh way of life? Conservation of several heritage sites in the State have led to these findings.
