ABSTRACT

This chapter considers what it means to be a Sikh by examining the diverse groups that claim a connection to the Sikh Gurus’ teachings in manners that do not align with the mainstream and (supposedly) normative Khalsa identity. These Sikhs have built communities centered on their varied understandings of what it means to be a Sikh and how best to strive towards realizing the spiritual goals set out by Guru Nanak. Attention is given to reinterpretations of what it means to be Khalsa, as well as which worship practices are emphasized, and their place in today’s multicultural globalized society.
