ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the emergence and impact of Sikh television channels. Having outlined the various types of Sikh television channels, the chapter focuses on broadcast channels, situating the emergence of these channels in the wider literature about religious television, diasporic media, and ethnic media. The chapter then analyzes the relationship between Sikh channels and previously established South Asian and Punjabi media before focusing on the Sikh television channels in the United Kingdom. The chapter then explores the establishment of these channels, before presenting an analysis of various types of programming broadcast. Having analyzed Sikh channel audience data, the chapter examines several issues that have led to the Sikh television channels based in the United Kingdom to be found in breach of state broadcasting regulation. The chapter concludes by offering avenues for further research.
