ABSTRACT

Reuse is meaningless in respect of a single product, being the feedback of material from one product to another. When the feedback is explicit rather than left to chance, such that effort is put into engineering reusable material and all new initiatives look first to see what the material can provide, then can say the reuse is organised and the material is an asset. The basis of planning is the definition of repeated need for common product characteristics. Each identifiable need breaks the problem down. Each presents different opportunities for reuse and there are different influences and limits upon success. For example, the scale of repetition limits the goal of occasions for reuse. The new organisation can be devised as an overlay on the redesigned business process of providing systems support. This is effectively a new systems development life cycle. It incorporates the reuse feedback loop and separates activities which make no sense to a single project.
