ABSTRACT

The emergence of video refereeing represents a milestone in the development of what is currently considered to be the most important global sport from a cultural, social and economic point of view: football. This has come about through technological advances and a clear example has been the incorporation of the use of replays as a key element of television broadcasts. Thus, it is interesting to study how this technical resource is converted into a part of the narrative of the broadcast in order to understand how a sport like football is capable of stirring such global emotions and feelings. In this chapter, we have studied the different types of replays, as well as their use and how they are embedded into the journalistic discourse. In addition, we reflect on how this resource has contributed to television programming, which has turned this format into the largest global mass television show. Understanding this process lays the foundations upon which the VAR can be successfully structured and integrated into football broadcasts. In addition, it will help construct and integrate the journalistic discourse surrounding these sporting events within what we call “TV post-refereeing”.
