ABSTRACT

In this chapter, some applications of pragmatics to humorous discourses in Spanish are reviewed and exemplified. After an introductory section covering general issues of humor in Spanish, I present an analysis of how jokes and puns in Spanish are inferred and humorous effects are obtained. One section also addresses stand-up comedy monologues in Spanish, the translation of humor from/into Spanish, and the analysis of humor in verbal-visual discourses (specifically cartoons, advertisements, and memes).
