ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a review of important studies that examine the impact of a Study Abroad (SA) experience on Spanish (L2) pragmatics development. First, a comparison of the SA context with other learning contexts (e.g., at-home vs. immersion setting) provides the rationale for the topic. Next, a critical review of previous research on SA and Spanish pragmatics is provided, followed by a section on gaps identified in the current Spanish pragmatics SA literature, such as participants’ L1 and age, type of instruments used, or topics, among others. We conclude with some suggestions for further research, such as the need to conduct more research on pragmatics in an SA context (especially with young(er) participants) or to conduct research focused on SA programs longer than a semester.
