ABSTRACT

Relevance theory is one of the most influential models in contemporary pragmatics. After introducing the basic notions of the theory, this chapter provides an overview of the ideas and topics that have attracted the attention of researchers in Hispanic linguistics, together with those in which scholars in the Spanish-speaking world have made significant contributions. These topics include the distinction between implicatures and explicatures, the notion of procedural meaning, the content of lexical items in figurative uses, the contrast between descriptive and metarepresentational uses, and also the application of relevance theory to phenomena like humor and digital communication.
