ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some case studies that have applied the principles of reality orientation (RO) to the problems presented by individual patients. Interventions, if made in a fashion that takes both the patient and the care-giver into account, might also have a positive knock-on effect on care-giver attitudes and behaviour. The establishment of a personal relationship in the assessment and treatment of the dementia patient can be achieved, however, and some would go so far as to advocate the use of modified psychotherapy with dementia patients. The diagnosis supported by EEG examination and neuropsychological investigation was of senile dementia. One of the most common deficiencies in studies of RO has been the tendency not to document whether the patient actually 'got the pill', that is, was in receipt of an altered approach from staff.
