ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the complex process of producing the video-assisted course, from initial conceptualisation to completed project. It also describes the context of the operational and developmental training needs which led to the generation of the package in a local authority social services department. The production team aimed at a level roughly equivalent to that which can be found in a popular tabloid-type newspaper, so that the course material would be accessible to the target groups. The producers knew the target group and roughly what they wanted to include in the package. The decision to produce the package was made in February 1983, with publication planned for May 1984, to coincide with an international seminar in London 'Group Care Practice'. The course participants are intended to work their way through the workbooks under the guidance of a course trainer and to look at a portion of video-tape when directed in the workbook.
