ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore the various barriers unique to the adult graduate student who must try to balance educational obligations with the needs of the family, work, and self. I draw on both my own personal experience and peer-reviewed research to guide the reader through the maze of obstacles presented to a returning student who is already well-established in their family and work roles. Practical issues like finding childcare, negotiating household tasks, and navigating work situations are addressed first. The second part of the chapter focuses on the emotional issues that complicate things further, including coping with guilt, inadequacy, and fear of failure. The final section of this chapter examines the benefits of consistently practicing self-care. This chapter will help adult students recognize that finding balance in school, career, and family is a complex, yet achievable, goal.
