ABSTRACT

Counselors who are interested in pursuing their doctoral degree in counselor education may find it advantageous to consider a growing trend in online educational delivery system. By 2019, there were seven doctoral programs accredited by the Council for the Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). There are also a growing number of CACREP-accredited master’s degree programs looking for completely online-trained professors. Consequently, having experience as an online doctoral student can mean a distinct advantage for new counselor educators. This chapter highlights the advantages and challenges of being an online doctoral student in counselor education, including having more multicultural experiences with fellow students and professors in multiple locations, as well as having increased access to educational opportunities that were not possible in previous generations. The authors also highlight important considerations for entering an online program, including an understanding of how a program fosters collegiality and community among fellow students and professors. Finally, they give advice and suggestions for success, including finding a fellow student to work through the program with, initiating involvement with professors and students, embracing new technology, and finding ways to use their work in multiple settings to increase effectiveness.
