ABSTRACT

On a regional level, the project named Bioenergy contribution of Latin America, Caribbean and Africa (LACAf) seeks to contribute to the Global Sustainable Bioenergy (GSB) project through local studies related to the production of sugarcane-derived bioenergy. The LACAf project is aimed at proving an updated perspective of the potential for sustainable production of bioenergy from sugarcane in the abovementioned regions. This chapter provides information for evaluating the suitability of areas for sustainable expansion of sugarcane-based ethanol, having two countries as case studies. Mozambique and Colombia were chosen, once they have shown significant potential for biofuels expansion. The database provides a foundation for in-depth study of the potential for sugarcane production in the country, impact evaluation studies, as well as for the selection of production models that maximize the benefits and minimize possible risks of sugarcane ethanol production. It uses the GSB–LACAf infrastructure that provides international and multidisciplinary collaboration while providing results that others can build on.
