ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of research on racism in Belgium. It examines the research in detail, focusing on the question, does the level of education have a significant relationship to racism and, if so, how can this relationship be interpreted. The chapter explores possible explanations for the impact of education on the level of racism. It explores the education variable was interpreted vertically, with the level of education often equating to no more than the number of years spent at school. The chapter deals with a short outline of the current state of racism research in Belgium. It presents an overview of the results of racism research, paying attention both to whether forms of racism and its expression have altered over time, and to the level of racism in Belgium, compared to other European Union member states. Electoral research shows that everyday racism constitutes the most decisive factor influencing the vote for an extreme right wing party.
